The Mayor of Colombo Holds First Public Day to Hear Residents’ Concerns

Her Worship the Mayor of Colombo, Ms. Vraie Cally Balthazaar, along with the Deputy Mayor, the Municipal Commissioner, and several senior officials of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), held the first-ever Public Day at the Mayor’s Office on June 23, 2025.

This new initiative marks a significant step toward participatory governance and community engagement within the city. The Public Day is designed to provide residents with a direct and open platform to voice their concerns, present grievances, and offer suggestions for the improvement of their neighborhoods and the city at large.

During the inaugural session, citizens brought forward a variety of issues ranging from waste management and traffic congestion to drainage, street lighting, and the maintenance of public spaces. The Mayor and the CMC’s senior leadership listened attentively, provided clarifications, and directed relevant departments to take follow-up actions where necessary.

This ongoing platform will be held every Monday at the Mayor’s Office, enabling continuous dialogue between the Municipal Council and the people it serves. The initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive urban development.

Residents are encouraged to attend future Public Days to help build a more responsive and resilient Colombo.
