Colombo Municipal Council Advances Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Efforts in Collaboration with the Partnership for Healthy Cities

The Colombo Municipal Council continues to strengthen its commitment to improving public health outcomes in the city. On the 7th of November, 2025, a productive meeting was held between officials from the Partnership for Healthy Cities and Her Worship the Mayor of Colombo to further explore opportunities for enhancing the city’s response to non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

During the discussion, both parties emphasized the growing challenges posed by rising rates of childhood overweight, obesity, and other NCDs such as diabetes and heart disease. The Honorable Mayor reiterated the Council’s dedication to fostering healthier diets, lifestyles, and safer environments for all residents—especially children.

A key focus of the meeting was the School Healthy Canteen Initiative, a collaborative effort with Partnership for Healthy Cities aimed at developing a food policy to set nutritional standards for the foods and drinks sold in school canteens. The project also provides kitchen equipment to the school canteens that are required for healthy food preparation. This initiative seeks to ensure that the food provided to schoolchildren supports their learning, well-being, and long-term health. The partnership will work closely with schools, parents, and community organizations to promote healthier food environments and improve nutrition literacy.

The Colombo Municipal Council looks forward to continuing its partnership with the Partnership for Healthy Cities to build a healthier, safer, and more inclusive city of Colombo for all. These efforts mark a significant step toward creating a city where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
