Navarathri Vizha 2026

Colombo, renowned for its rich cultural diversity and the harmonious coexistence of its communities, reaffirmed its commitment to religious harmony and cultural inclusivity through the celebration of Navarathri Vizha 2026. Upholding the values of unity, mutual respect, and spiritual solidarity, this annual religious and cultural event brought together representatives from diverse communities to celebrate tradition and strengthen communal bonds.

Navarathri Vizha 2026, organized by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) under the patronage of Her Worship the Mayor of Colombo, Ms. Vraie Cally Balthazaar, was held on 19 October 2026 at the Members’ Hall of the CMC. As one of the four major religious events celebrated annually by the Council, this year’s Navarathri Vizha featured a meaningful blend of devotional observances, cultural performances, and expressions of communal harmony.

The programme commenced with the Navarathri pooja, followed by devotional renditions of Thevaram and Sagalakala Valli Malai. The cultural programme included a welcome dance performed by students of C/Vipulanantha College, a musical instrument performance by the University of Kelaniya, and a Bharatanatyam performance presented by a CMC Legal Officer. Further dance performances were presented by students of Mutuwal Hindu College, Nawagampura Sangatamil, C/Vivekananda College, and C/N Kalaimagal Tamil Vidyalayam, adding colour and vibrancy to the occasion.

The event was graced by the Guest of Honor, Mr. Hanif Yusoof, Hon. Governor of the Western Province, and a representative of the High Commission of India. The distinguished gathering also included Her Worship the Mayor of Colombo, Ms. Vraie Cally Balthazaar; the Hon. Deputy Mayor, Members of the Municipal Council (MMCs), the Municipal Commissioner; the Deputy Municipal Commissioners (Administration and Engineering Services), the Municipal Secretary; Heads of Departments, Directors and CMC staff members.

Beyond its religious significance, Navarathri Vizha 2026 served as a meaningful reflection of Colombo’s enduring commitment to inclusivity, mutual understanding, and the peaceful coexistence of all communities. Through the celebration of religious traditions and cultural heritage, the Colombo Municipal Council continues to foster unity, strengthen intercommunity relationships, and promote the values of respect and harmony that enrich the city’s diverse social fabric.
